Design March in Reykjavik 18-22 March

Gagarin is participating in Design March, an initiative of the Iceland Design Centre. Design March is a four day feast for designers, businesses and others interested in design. Nils Wiberg, Interaction Designer at Gagarin is giving a lecture on design and design process at the National Museum of Iceland Friday March 19 at 15:00.

Critical in thoughtful design is creating a design process that fits the design: to design the design process. Applying design methods is a crucial part of this engineering; to be able to tap into the creativity you must establish boundaries where creative thinking can take place. On the contrary to what one might think, it is benefitted by being formalized rather than the opposite. By due diligence and hard work one can maximize the creative output of the design process by designing it appropriately.

For a long time design has been about turning existing situations into preferred ones. It is fine if you're redesigning and improving; but if your goal is to invent new situations you cannot satisfy with transforming old ones. For that you need to shift the boundaries of your task as a designer. Innovative thinking is perhaps the most important thinking skill of such a designer. Creating language and contexts for creativity is at the heart of this work.

We thank the National Museum for collaborating on this project with us.
