Reykjavik 871 +/-2 receives the NODEM award 2006

NODEM awardThe Settlement exhibition Reykjavik 871 +/-2 did receive the NODEM award 2006. The award is granted for "Best Design of Digital Experiences in Museums" in the Nordic countries. Gagarin was responsible for the design and production of the multimedia digital content of the exhibition, in cooperation with the company Art+Com in Berlin.

The focus of the exhibition, which is part of the Reykjavik City Museum, is a longhouse site unearthed in archaeological excavations in centre of Reykjavik. The latest technology and interactive media are used to give a rich experience to visitors that come to see the oldest archaeological site in Reykjavik.

In the statement from the jury it says that "...after much discussion we have decided that across all dimensions, the winning entry is that of the Reykjavik City Museum, and their software partner, Gagarin, for their visually appealing, instructive, and innovative exhibit, Reykjavik 871+/- 2 … the Settlement Exhibition.  This exhibit shows sensitivity to place, careful integration of mixed media, multi-point accessibility, and a high standard of presentation".

Gagarin produced a variety of digital content for different parts of the Settlement Exhibition, including motion silhouettes showing the lifestyle of people at the time of the settlement, a 3D model and animation of the longhouse, and Flash animated content appearing in a media station. Visitors can explore a variety of information on archaeological methods, the structure of the Viking-Age longhouse, and life in early Iceland.  The interactive design and of these aspects were carried out by Art+Com.

On two comparison screens, designed and programmed by Gagarin, visitors can explore cultural affinities between the nations around the North Atlantic, and Viking expansion and settlements during the Viking Age.

Gagarin produced a system used in the multimedia centre to present more detailed information about the excavations and other related subjects. In due course, this information will be accessible on the Internet.

The NODEM conference was held in Oslo 7-9 December and was hosted by Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, in collaboration with V4M Interactive Institute, Stockholm.
